As the US Intelligence Community’s (IC) accredited, degree-granting university, NIU holds a unique position as the cornerstone of education, research, and innovation for developing and enriching the intelligence profession. NIU students are immersed in a classified learning environment that fosters the development of real-world solutions to national security challenges at the Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (TS/SCI) arena.

NIU Through The Years

Formally established by DoD Directive 5105.25 as a professional educational institution attached to the Defense Intelligence Agency in 1962. In its 62+ year history, NIU has produced some of the IC’s most influential leaders and continues to empower minds and shape the future in service to the nation.

National Intelligence University Name Through Time: 1962: Defense Intelligence School, 1983: Defense Intelligence College, 1993: Joint Military Intelligence College, 2006: National Defense Intelligence College, 2012: National Intelligence University. 2021: NIU transitions from the Defense Intelligence University to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
